The Angelou Centre

The Angelou Centre is a black-led women’s organisation based in Newcastle supporting women and children who are survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence through counselling, safe accommodation, training & wellbeing activities for themselves and their children.

They wanted to update their children’s room and IT suite to create a creative studio for children, young people and adults and a lounge for staff and mothers and to use as a counselling space. We ran workshops with staff, mothers and young people to ascertain needs and wants.

Due to tight budgets we worked with the Angelou Centre to source in kind support and donations for the space and huge thanks to Barratt Homes, Brewers Paints Foundation and Howdens Newcastle for their support. If you might be willing to support future projects, please get in touch with the Angelou Centre.

We created a calm and inspiring creative studio with flexibile furniture to allow everything from baby play to adult art classes. The lounge had no external windows so we used bright colours alongside donated furniture to create a warm and inviting space that is already being well used.

‘I was back in the office today after some time away and was completely blown away by the transformation of the two rooms – what an incredible job! The spaces look amazing, and staff are absolutely thrilled with the new lounge.
A huge thank you from me and the entire team for the incredible care and effort you’ve poured into this project. We genuinely can’t thank you enough. It’s clear that every bit of input from mothers, children, and the CYP team has been thoughtfully taken into account and the result is truly amazing.’
